President Gadsden Addresses 2017 Annual Meeting Theme; Submissions Deadline Nears 
In a new video featured on the AERA website, President Vivian L. Gadsden discusses the meaning and importance of the 2017 Annual Meeting Theme: "Knowledge to Action: Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity.”  

 
AERA Holds Press Club Briefing on Post-Fisher Implications and Research Opportunities 
AERA held a briefing at the National Press Club on June 28—five days after the U.S. Supreme Court announced its 4–3 decision in Fisher v. University of Texas, Austin—to scrutinize from a legal and research perspective what the ruling means and what lies ahead.
 
AERA Names First Congressional Fellow
AERA has announced the selection of Jenna R. Sablan as the first-ever AERA Congressional Fellow. Sablan holds a research position at Loyola Marymount University.
 
AERA to Hold July 14 Webinar on Communicating With Federal Policy Makers Locally
On July 14, AERA will hold a webinar titled “Meet Members of Congress in Your District.” This webinar is being offered only to AERA members. It is directed to education researchers seeking to learn strategies and build skills in communicating research to elected officials in their district offices.
 
AERA Announces 2016-17 Minority Dissertation Fellows
AERA has announced the recipients of the 2016–17 AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research and Travel Awards.

Senate Appropriations Committee Approves Small Cuts to IES, Boost to NIH in LHHS Bill
For the first time in seven years, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a bipartisan Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) Appropriations bill this month. The $161.9 billion bill for FY 2017 is a net reduction of $270 million from FY 2016.
Education Department Accepting Comments on Draft ESSA Accountability Regulations
The Department of Education issued draft regulations on May 31 that would guide states and school districts in implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The draft regulations focus on three areas: accountability, state plans, and data reporting.
 

NIH to Launch Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study
This summer the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is launching a major longitudinal study on child health and brain development that will be of interest to many in the education research field.
NACHHD Council Meets
The National Advisory Child Health and Human Development (NACHHD) Council met on June 9. The council is charged with advising, consulting with, and making recommendations to the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) on matters related to the research and research support activities and other functions of the institute.
