AERA and Spencer Foundation Launch COVID-19 Impact Survey
AERA and the Spencer Foundation launched the COVID-19 Impact Study on October 29. The survey is directed to early career scholars within seven years after receiving their degrees and current doctoral students. Read more

AERA and OECD to Hold Policy Forum on New TALIS Video Study Results​
On November 24, AERA and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will hold an interactive policy forum to discuss new results from the TALIS Video Study. The TVS is an innovative project that uses new research methods to deepen understanding of teaching and learning at an international scale. Read more

AERA Division D Past Vice President Suzanne Lane Among Five Appointments to NAGB​

As a supplement to the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology’s 2020 Research and Policy Conference held last month, FCSM and the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics hosted an eight-session webinar series on confidentiality and federal data access between June and October. Read more

AERA Speaking Out On Issues

AERA, AAAS, and Key Researchers  Call on OMB to Require NSF to Include Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Measures in Surveys
In a jointly signed letter on October 25, AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine; Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; New York University professor Jonathan B. Freeman; and Laura E. Durso, executive director and chief learning officer of the Whitman-Walker Institute, urged the Office of Management and Budget to work with the National Science Foundation to include sexual orientation and gender identity measures in the 2021 National Survey of College Graduates or, at a minimum, initiate piloting of SOGI questions as part of NSF’s testing of new survey modifications. Read more

AERA Responds to Call for Information on Federal STEM Education Strategic Plan
On October 19, AERA submitted comments in response to a request for information on STEM education advanced by the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on STEM Education. Read more

AERA Executive Director Urges Withdrawal of ICE Proposed Rule on International Student Visas​
On October 26, AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine submitted a letter in response to a proposed rule from the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau that would impose time limits on visas for international students, foreign exchange visitors, and representatives of foreign information media in the United States. AERA Joins Letter Urging Administration to Rescind Series of Actions Limiting Diversity Training in Federal Agencies
On October 7, AERA and 49 other scientific organizations sent a letter to Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, to urge the Trump administration to rescind elimination of federal employee training programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Read more

AERA Joins Comment on Federal Student Aid Draft 2020-24 Strategic Plan
On October 23, AERA joined 13 other member and partner organizations of the Postsecondary Data Collaborative on a letter responding to the Federal Student Aid 2020–24 draft strategic plan. Read more

In Memoriam

AERA members who have recently passed away

Melanie Buffington, 47, died on September 16. She was an associate professor of art education and interim chair of the art education department at Virginia Commonwealth University.  She was a member of AERA Division G - Social Context of Education.  Read more

Roger Kaufman, 88, died on September 23. Kaufman, an AERA Fellow, was professor emeritus at Florida State University and served as Distinguished Research Professor at the Sonora Institute of Technology. He was a member of AERA Division J - Postsecondary Education. Read more

Frank Worts, 78, died on August 9. He was an assistant professor and lecturer in the Human Services Departmet at Lincoln University and directed the institution’ s continuing education program. Read more
