Orfield to Give 2013 Brown Lecture
On October 24, noted civil rights and education policy expert Gary Orfield, co-director of the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), will explore the unfulfilled promises of civil rights reforms in the nation’s education system and the steps necessary for creating opportunity in contemporary America at AERA’s 2013 Brown Lecture in Education Research. AERA Past President Among Five Appointees to NAGB

On Heels of New Congressional Restrictions, NSF Cancels Poli Sci Grant Cycle
Without explanation, the National Science Foundation recently cancelled its next round of political science funding, which covers the remainder of 2013. Read more

House Passes ESEA Reauthorization Bill
On a party-line 221–207 vote last month, the House of Representatives passed the Student Success Act, legislation reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Read more

Social, Behavioral Scientists Offer Insight Into Common Rule
The National Research Council’s Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences has released a report based on a March 2013 workshop that explored the implications of proposed revisions to current regulations for protecting human participants, while at the same time advancing behavioral and social sciences. Education Department to Release Data Collection Catalog
The Government Accountability Office issued a report on July 29 to provide an update on the U.S. Department of Education’s inventory of its data collections. Read more

Upcoming Deadlines

Matching Funds Initiative
AERA Council has authorized provision of matching resources to enhance the vitality of 2014 Annual Meeting activities undertaken by special interest groups (SIGs) and divisions. Up to $2,500 in matching funds will be provided to a division or SIG that solicits a matching (or greater) amount from an external agency, foundation, organization, or other entity for this purpose. Call for Award Nominations
AERA's Awards Program is one of the most prominent ways for education researchers to recognize and honor the outstanding scholarship and service of their peers. Read more

Call for ERSP Proposals
AERA invites proposals for Education Research Service Projects (ERSPs), an initiative designed to encourage education researchers to offer their pro bono expertise to educational organizations, institutions, or other community groups in areas where research can make a difference. Read more

Reminder: Call for Education Research Conferences
AERA invites proposals for education research conferences that break new ground in substantive areas of inquiry, stimulate new lines of study on issues that have been largely unexplored, or develop innovative research methods or techniques that can contribute more generally to education research.
