AERA Announces 2021 Award Winners in Education Research; Awards Ceremony to be Held December 7
The American Educational Research Association has announced the winners of its 2021 awards for excellence in education research. Recipients include Congressman Bobby Scott, Nikole Hannah-Jones, and exemplary scholars across education research fields and career stages. 

Sylvia Hurtado to Deliver AERA Distinguished Lecture on September 30
Sylvia Hurtado, a longstanding AERA Fellow and a professor at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, will give the 2021 AERA Distinguished Lecture on September 30, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. EDT. Read more

The nominations deadline for the 2022 AERA Awards is December 1, 2021, except for nominations for the Outstanding Book Award, which are due November 17.

President Biden Appoints Peggy Carr to Serve as NCES Commissioner​
On August 16, President Joe Biden announced the appointment of Peggy G. Carr to serve as commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics. Read more

Karen Marrongelle Named as Chief Operating Officer of NSF

During the May National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources Advisory Committee meeting, EHR Assistant Director Karen Marrongelle announced that she will be serving as the NSF chief operating officer as of August 1. Read more

AERA Provides Comments on Department of Education RFI on Nondiscriminatory School Discipline

On July 23, AERA Executive Director Felice Levine offered comments on behalf of the Association in response to a Request for Information from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights regarding the nondiscriminatory administration of school discipline. Read more

AERA Provides Comments on OSTP Request on Strengthening Federal Scientific Integrity Policies
On July 28, AERA submitted comments to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in response to a Request for Information on improving federal scientific integrity policies. Read more

U.S. Department of Education Announces 2021–22 Civil Rights Data Collection​

David Bills, 66, Professor in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies at the University of Iowa, died on July 15. Read More

Jim Brandon, 72, a distinguished member of the Alberta education community for 50 years, died on August 26. Read More

Laura H. (Hill) Chapman, 86, died on August 17. She was an art educator, Ph.D. in educational research, taught art in Florida Public Schools and held faculty posts at Indiana University, University of Illinois, Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati. Read More

Mike Rose, 77, an esteemed and beloved education research professor at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, died on August 15. Read more

Daryl Siedentop, 82, a well-respected faculty member in physical education-teacher education at Ohio State University, died on July 15. Read More
