Na'ilah Suad Nasir, president of the Spencer Foundation, has been voted president-elect of AERA. Members also elected several new AERA Council representatives. Read more

New AERA Fellows To Be Inducted at Annual Meeting
AERA has announced the selection of 12 prominent scholars as 2020 AERA Fellows. AERA Fellows are selected on the basis of their notable and sustained research achievements. They join 665 current AERA Fellows and will be inducted during the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Read more 

AERA Minority Meta-Analysis Fellows—Deadline for Applications: March 16
With support from the Spencer Foundation, AERA invites applications from underrepresented minority researchers seeking to pursue meta-analyses in their education research. Selected fellows will participate in one of two courses offered by the professional development program at the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting. Read more

More High-Profile Presidential Sessions Announced for Annual Meeting
AERA President Vanessa Siddle Walker and 2020 Annual Meeting Co-Chairs Sheryl J. Croft and Michelle A. Purdy have developed 43 sessions that align with the 2020 theme. Read more about the second set of 15 sessions, which provide a sense of the important content that will engage attendees.

On Feb. 14, AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine participated in a Town Hall on “Combating Sexual and Gender Harassment in STEMM: An Enterprise Approach” at the 2020 Annual Meeting of AAAS in Seattle, WA. Read more

President’s Budget Proposes Deep Cuts for Federal Agencies Supporting Education Research and Troubling Changes to IES
The Trump administration released its budget request for FY 2021 on Feb. 10. Surprisingly, the request includes a proposal for reauthorizing the Education Science Reform ACT (ESRA), which provides the authority for the research, statistical, evaluation, and dissemination programs within the Institute of Education Sciences. White House OSTP Seeks Public Comment on Public Access Policies Related to Federally Funded Research—Deadline to Comment: March 16
On Feb. 19, the White House OSTP and the NSTC Subcommittee on Open Science issued a request for public comment to seek recommendations on approaches for ensuring broad public access to the peer-reviewed scholarly publications, data, and code that result from federally funded scientific research. NIH Seeks Input on Scientific Priorities for Behavioral and Social Science Research (Deadline:  March 29) and Comments on Strategic Plan Framework (Deadline: March 25)
The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research issued an RFI on Feb. 18 to solicit feedback on research directions aligned with the priorities included in the current OBSSR Strategic Plan. NIH also issued an RFI on Feb. 12 to gather input on the framework of the agency’s overall strategic plan for FY 2021–25. Read more

House Science Committee Republicans Introduce Legislation to Increase Investment in Scientific Research
On Jan. 29, Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK), ranking member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, introduced the Securing American Leadership in Science and Technology Act, which aims to address international competitiveness in scientific research and climate change. Read more

2020 Yidan Prizes—Deadline for Nominations: March 31
The Yidan Prize for Education Research recognizes outstanding research that contributes in significant ways to education. The Yidan Prize for Education Development recognizes innovative ideas that tackle important challenges in the field of education.

2021 Grawemeyer Award in Education—Deadline for Nominations: April 15
The Grawemeyer Award in Education is intended to stimulate the dissemination, public scrutiny, and implementation of ideas that have potential to bring about significant improvement in educational practice and advances in educational attainment.

Call for Education Research Conference Proposals – Deadline: Thursday, March 5
AERA’s Research Conferences Program awards grants of up to $35,000 for conferences intended to break new ground in substantive areas of inquiry, stimulate new lines of study on issues that have been largely unexplored, or develop innovative research methods or techniques that can contribute more generally to education research.
Call for Dissertation and Research Grant Applications - Deadline: March 23
The AERA-NSF Grants Program supports advanced quantitative research and statistical analysis of major data sets made possible by federal government support. Dissertation and research grant proposals are encouraged on all aspects of education and learning of relevance to STEM policy.
Call for Proposals for 2020  AERA Fellowship Program on the Study of Deeper LearningExtended Deadline: March 30
AERA invites proposals from early career education researchers and postdoctoral scholars to enhance the use of the Deeper Learning data set. This program supports postdoctoral and early career scholars undertaking research projects using the Deeper Learning data and the design and implementation of professional development and training around these data.

AERA Open Special Topic: Educational Data Science—Deadline: Papers due June 1
This AERA Open special topic call aims to showcase the best of this ongoing genre of research and to broaden the scope of data science applications to include work on diverse topics and frameworks related to education and learning, much of which is being generated by interdisciplinary scholars and educational domain experts.
