Vanessa Siddle Walker Voted AERA President-Elect
Key Members Elected to AERA Council
Vanessa Siddle Walker, the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of African American Educational Studies at Emory University, has been voted president-elect of AERA. AERA members also selected several new AERA Council representatives. Read more
AERA Issues Statement on the Justice Department’s Cancellation of School Safety Studies
The National Institute of Justice has cancelled two initiatives that research school safety. Losing these programs is tragically counter-productive and short-sighted at a time when the need for evidence-based policies and practices that protect schools, students, and society has never been greater. AERA Joins Science Community to Urge Congress to Support Gun Violence Research
On March 2, AERA joined the broader science community in calling on Congress to provide dedicated federal funding for research on gun violence. AERA has also asked Association members to show their support by signing the March for Science petition and contacting their elected representatives. Read more
AERA “Days on the Hill” Drive Advocacy for Education Research
An invited delegation of AERA members who receive federal funding, come from strategic congressional districts, and offer diverse expertise visited Capitol Hill on March 5 and 6 to ask Congress to support agencies that fund education research and data. Read more
AERA and AAPSS Hold Capitol Hill Briefing on Educational Inequality
On March 22, nearly 100 congressional staff, federal employees, and members of the research community attended a congressional briefing—“In the Age of Inequality, Does Public Schooling Make a Difference?”—cohosted by AERA and the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS). AERA Questions Citizenship Item Being Added to U.S. Census
On March 26, the Commerce Department announced that the 2020 U.S. Census will include a question on the citizenship status of those being counted. The announcement was quickly condemned by the research community. Read more
Final FY 2018 Appropriations Bill Includes Additional Spending for Research Agencies
Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill to fund the government for Fiscal Year 2018, and President Donald Trump signed it into law on March 23. The legislation reflects the increase in the budget caps for FY 2018 and 2019 included in the previous continuing resolution. Read more
NSF’s EHR Issues Guidance on Data Management Plans to Support Data Sharing in Education Research
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced on March 6 that the Education and Human Resources Directorate (EHR) had issued new guidance for grant applicants for including data management plans in their proposals. The guidance is intended to support research transparency and data sharing in education research. Read more
Friends of IES Holds Capitol Hill Briefing on Advances in Educating Underprepared College Students
On February 26, the Friends of IES coalition hosted a briefing, “Advances in Educating Underprepared College Students: Knowledge, Policy and Practice.” The briefing presented research and partnerships that have shown positive effects in helping students who arrive at community colleges underprepared to complete courses and persist. Division D Changes Name and Adds New Section
AERA Division D has changed its name from Measurement and Research Methodology to Measurement and Research Methodologies, added a new section (Multiple and Mixed Methodologies), and renamed two other sections. Read more
AERA Brings Graduate Students to Washington to Participate in CASE Workshop
AERA sponsored four graduate student members who participated in the 5th annual Catalyzing Advocacy for Science and Engineering (CASE) Workshop in Washington, D.C., March 18–21. The workshop presents an opportunity for students in scientific disciplines to learn about science policy and advocacy. Read more
AERA Awards Six New Education Research Service Project Grants
Six new projects have received AERA Education Research Service Project (ERSP) awards. The ERSP program provides small grants ($1,000 to $5,000) to education researchers who offer their expertise on a pro bono basis to educational organizations, institutions, or community groups that can benefit from and express a need for their knowledge and skills.
