AERA Opens 2021 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions; Deadline to Submit: July 22
The AERA 2021 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions is now available on the AERA website. The 2021 AERA Annual Meeting will be held April 9–12 in Orlando, Florida. The theme is “Accepting Educational Responsibility.” Read more

High Turnout and Faculty Reinvention Mark the Launch of the AERA Virtual Research Learning Series—Three More to Be Offered in June 

AERA kicked off a nine-course Virtual Research Learning Series in May, with the first two courses together drawing a worldwide attendance over 700. All of the courses are in a four-hour format and have been designed to engage attendees in the learning process in virtual space and scaled to size. Read more

Reminder to 2020 Annual Meeting Authors—Dissemination Assets for Your Use
AERA is offering authors two opportunities to share and make accessible their papers accepted or invited for presentation at the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting. The AERA Online Paper Repository provides access to papers, and a new AERA Interactive Presentation Gallery provides authors with web-based presentation opportunities. Read More

 
AERA Submits Senate Testimony Calling for Support of Education Research Funding and Protection of the Data and Research Infrastructure 

In May, AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine submitted written testimony to two Senate appropriations subcommittees to highlight the importance of investing in federal agencies that support funding for education research as part of the regular FY 2021 appropriations process. Read more

AERA Responds to OSTP Request on Public Access to Publications, Data, and Code from Federally-Funded Research
On May 6, AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine submitted comments to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) on its request for information (RFI) on public access to publications, data, and code from federally funded research grants. Read more

AERA Releases New Book on Researching Race in Education
AERA has released the ebook version of a new volume: Condition or Process? Researching Race in Education. The book was edited by Adrienne D. Dixson, Gloria J. Ladson-Billings, Cecilia E. Suarez, William T. Trent, and James D. Anderson. Read more
 

Laura Desimone Wins SAGE Publishing’s 10-Year Impact Award for ER Article
Laura M. Desimone has received SAGE’s 10-Year Impact Award for her 2019 article “Improving Impact Studies of Teachers’ Professional Development: Toward Better Conceptualizations and Measures.” Her study, published in Educational Researcher, was the most cited paper over the past 10 years in SAGE’s suite of journals. Read more

Throughout May, Congress continued to work on addressing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, holding hearings and advancing new legislation to address national public health, economic, and education needs. Read more

Amid Covid Uncertainty, National Assessment Governing Board Quarterly Meeting Focuses on Status of 2021 NAEP
The National Assessment Governing Board’s quarterly meeting on May 15, held virtually, was dominated by discussion of the status of scheduled assessments for the 2021 National Assessment of Educational Progress. Read more

National Science Board and EHR Advisory Committee Each Convene Virtually
On May 5 and 6, the National Science Board met virtually to discuss the National Science Foundation’s response to Covid-19 and to present its Vision 2030 report, which details steps that the United States should take to maintain its global leadership role in the science and engineering enterprise.  Read more

AERA Open Special Topic: Immigration and Education—Deadline: Abstracts due August 1
This AERA Open special topic call aims to examine the current state of research at the intersection of immigration and education. Of particular interest are studies linking immigration policy and the current political environment to outcomes and experiences.
AERA Open Special Topic: Education in the Time of Pandemic—Deadline: Abstracts due on a rolling basis through September 1

The purpose of this special topic, launched in response to the current pandemic crisis, will be to learn and share as many lessons as possible, so that we are better prepared for systemic shocks in the future.

AERA Open Special Topic: Educational Data Science—Deadline: Papers due October 1
This AERA Open special topic call aims to showcase the best of this ongoing genre of research and to broaden the scope of data science applications to include work on diverse topics and frameworks related to education and learning, much of which is being generated by interdisciplinary scholars and educational domain experts.

In Memoriam

AERA members who have recently passed away

Carol M. Connor, Chancellor’s Professor in Education at the University of California, Irvine, 67, died on May 14, 2020. Connor was named an AERA Fellow in 2015 and served as an associate editor for AERA Open. She was a member of Division C: Learning and Instruction. Read more

John H. Lounsbury, 96, died on April 2, 2020. He was dean emeritus of the John H. Lounsbury College of Education at Georgia College. Read more

Louis M. Smith, professor emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis, 90, died on January 30, 2020.  He was named an AERA Fellow in 2008. Read more

Ilene B. Harris, a professor and former head of the Department of Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, 75, died on January 19, 2020. Harris served as vice president of Division I: Education in the Professions in 1995-1997. Read more

Karen D. King, program director at the National Science Foundation (Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings in the Education and Human Resources Directorate), 48, died on December 24, 2019. Read more

Phyllis L. Clay, who retired as manager of research and evaluation at Albuquerque Public Schools, died on December 12, 2019. Read more
