Studies in Engineering Education: Call for Papers - Special Issue on Large Language Models in Interpretive Engineering Education Research
Studies in Engineering Education (SEE) invites submissions for a special issue focused on the use of large language models (LLMs) in interpretive qualitative engineering education research. As an international, open-access journal dedicated to advancing research on teaching and learning in engineering, SEE welcomes contributions from scholars across education, the learning sciences, and related social inquiry fields whose work engages with engineering contexts.
This special issue encourages authors to examine the ethical, methodological, and epistemological implications of LLM-assisted inquiry and to explore the role of LLMs in qualitative research more broadly (e.g., Katz et al., 2023; Johri et al., 2023; Nguyen & Welch, 2025; Anakok et al., 2025). Submissions may include theoretical contributions, literature reviews, methodological reflections, or empirical studies that advance understanding of how these tools might shape interpretive research practice.
Important Date • Structured extended abstracts (1500 words, excluding references) are due January 10, 2026.
