Division L - Educational Policy and Politics

Division L - Main Website

 

Division L focuses on research which affects educational policy and educational policy effects and impact. Our members come from a wide background of fields, from educational measurement to political think tank arenas. Division L sessions at AERA are some of the few places where people from such diverse backgrounds can directly interact with each other.

Tim is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University. Currently he is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow studying the intersection of public planning, urban revitalization, and educational reform. His dissertation topic looks for unique partnership efforts between economic development organizations in urban areas and neighborhood schools in those areas. Other research interests include community economic development and the coordinated services school reforms.

Todd is a doctoral student in the Educational Policy & Planning Program at the University of Texas at Austin. Hutner also serves as a Teaching Assistant for the UTeach Natural Sciences program. His research focuses on the intersection of educational policy and teacher pedagogy, particularly within STEM fields. Prior to returning to graduate school, Hutner taught Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Astronomy at the high school level in both Florida and Texas.

 


Update from the 2010 Annual Meeting 
This was a very eventful year for Division L graduate students:

  • Our fireside chat, Critical Conversations: Exploring the Influx of Market-Based Reform Efforts Within State and Federal Educational, was a big highlight of this year’s program. Members of the panel included Dr. Michael Apple (University of Wisconsin at Madison), Dr. Fredrick Hess (American Enterprise Institute), and Dr. Dominic Brewer (USC).  The Chat provided a forum for the guests to interact with each other and the audience in a face-to-face discussion of the politics of market reform in the US school system.
  • We also sponsored an open session aimed at mentoring graduate students and junior faculty in Advice for Successfully Navigating Early Career Stage in Education Policy.  Member s of this panel included Dr. William Firestone (Rutgers University), Dr. Gerald LeTendre (Penn State University), and Dr. Tom Smith (Vanderbilt University).
