On October 13, the Department of Education announced that Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona appointed five members to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The appointees include AERA member Scott Marion, executive director of the Center for Assessment, who will serve as one of the NAGB testing and measurement experts.

NAGB is an independent, nonpartisan board that sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and is responsible for communicating results of the NAEP tests. The 26 NAGB members represent several congressionally mandated categories, including testing and measurement experts, policymakers evenly divided by political party, and practitioners.

Marion is a member of AERA Division D–Measurement and Research Methodologies. He has served on panels for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, including the panel for the report Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards. He previously served as director of assessment and accountability for the Wyoming Department of Education. Marion will succeed Gregory Cizek (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), whose second term has expired.

In addition to Marion, the following individuals were appointed:

  • Dana Boyd, principal of Parkland Elementary School in El Paso, Texas. She will be serving a second term.
  • Tyler Cramer, CEO of Remarc Associates, LLC. Cramer will be serving a second term as one of the general public representatives.
  • Viola Garcia, a member of the Aldine Independent School District Board of Trustees in Texas and current president of the National School Boards Association. Garcia is also emeritus professor in the department of urban education at the University of Houston–Downtown.
  • Beverly Perdue, who will serve a second term as the Democratic governor. Perdue served as governor of North Carolina from 2009 to 2013. In addition to this reappointment, Secretary Cardona named Purdue as the NAGB chair for the 2021–22 term.

The newly appointed and reappointed members will be sworn in during the next NAGB meeting on November 18–20. The terms for each began on October 1 and will end September 30, 2025.
