On October 13, the Department of Education announced that Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona appointed five members to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The appointees include AERA member Scott Marion, executive director of the Center for Assessment, who will serve as one of the NAGB testing and measurement experts.
NAGB is an independent, nonpartisan board that sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and is responsible for communicating results of the NAEP tests. The 26 NAGB members represent several congressionally mandated categories, including testing and measurement experts, policymakers evenly divided by political party, and practitioners.
Marion is a member of AERA Division D–Measurement and Research Methodologies. He has served on panels for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, including the panel for the report Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards. He previously served as director of assessment and accountability for the Wyoming Department of Education. Marion will succeed Gregory Cizek (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), whose second term has expired.

The newly appointed and reappointed members will be sworn in during the next NAGB meeting on November 18–20. The terms for each began on October 1 and will end September 30, 2025.
