The October issue of the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics (JEBS) opened with a special section titled “AI in Educational Statistics.” The special section articles are available open access at the links below.
The introduction to the special section, written by Steven Andrew Culpepper (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; JEBS 2020–2022 editor and 2022–2024 co-editor), explores how AI is transforming education but also how the current edition of Standards for Educational and Psychological Measurement (the Standards) does not account for AI’s growing role in the field. The section pulls together experts in “testing, measurement, psychometrics, and statistics” to discuss the implications of the 2023 Duolingo document “Responsible AI Standards” by Jill Burstein, to offer insights on monitoring and ensuring the ethical use of AI, and to consider how these implications and insights can be used to further revise the Standards, serving as “an important foundation for future inquiry on the use of AI in education.”
