AERA has undertaken an external review of the 2021 Annual Meeting to further the association’s understanding of the technological challenges related to the virtual platform and what can be learned from the experience.

“We very much regret the technical problems and challenges that adversely affected use of the conference platform. We apologize to our attendees, who had every reason to expect a high-quality opportunity to present and learn, but were met with an unacceptable circumstance,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “This external assessment is crucial to ensuring that the association learns from this experience and is best positioned to serve our members and meeting attendees going forward.”

The review was carried out by the Center for Applied Research, Inc. (CFAR), an independent management consulting firm with considerable experience working with higher education institutions and scientific and scholarly associations. A summary report and key recommendations will be prepared and shared with AERA members in September.
