Groundbreaking scholar Dolores Delgado Bernal will deliver the AERA Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture at the 2024 Annual Meeting, to be held April 11–14 in Philadelphia. The lecture will begin at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.
Delgado Bernal is a professor of educational leadership for social justice at Loyola Marymount University. Her scholarship bridges the fields of education and Chicanx studies and draws from Chicana feminist and critical race scholarship to investigate education inequities, Latinx educational pathways, and student resistance.
“We are honored to hear from Dr. Delgado Bernal with this high-profile lecture,” said AERA President Tyrone Howard. “As an accomplished scholar-activist, her insights will give attendees much to consider in relation to this year’s theme, ‘Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action.’”
“Dr. Delgado Bernal’s scholarship is known for its rigor and for centering racism and sexism in the study of educational policy and practice,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Her lecture will provide an opportunity to learn from a leading intersectional scholar speaking on issues of critical importance to the field and society.”
Delgado Bernal was named an AERA Fellow in 2023 and received the AERA Scholars of Color Mid-Career Contribution Award in 2010. The Critical Race Studies in Education Association honored her with the Derrick Bell Legacy Award in 2015.
Among her numerous contributions to the field is her groundbreaking 1998 Harvard Educational Review article titled “Using a Chicana Feminist Epistemology in Educational Research.” She has published several books, including (as co-author) Transforming Educational Pathways for Chicana/o Students: A Critical Race Feminista Praxis and (as editor) Chicana/Latina Education in Everyday Life: Feminista Perspectives on Pedagogy and Epistemology, as well as numerous articles and chapters.
The AERA Wallace Foundation Lecture is one of the major events at the Annual Meeting. Additional information about prominent sessions is available on the 2024 Annual Meeting website and will be announced in future issues of Highlights.
