August 2023

On August 18, the AERA Executive Board voted to cancel the virtual component of the 2024 Annual Meeting, which was scheduled for April 25 and 26. The Board made this decision due to a very low number of submissions for the virtual component. (AERA received more than 10,000 submissions overall for 2024, with more place-based submissions than in 2023.)

For the virtual component of the meeting, most units received very few paper submissions—insufficient to create paper or roundtable sessions—and only a small number of session submissions. The Board concluded that a virtual meeting would not be viable this year as a meaningful experience for accepted presenters or attendees.

An immediate plan of action was issued for virtual submissions along with continued planning for the place-based meeting in Philadelphia on April 11-14, 2024.

Individuals who submitted papers or sessions for the virtual component have been given an opportunity for their work to be peer-reviewed and, if accepted, to be presented at the Philadelphia meeting or, if in-person attendance in not possible, to have their presentations in the 2024 i-Presentation Gallery.

AERA reached out to virtual component submitters, inviting them to decide how they wished their work to be considered and providing tips with an explanation of the options available. The submitting paper authors and session organizers have until September 8 to make their decision.

“AERA continues to be committed to inclusivity in its meetings and to creating and holding events that are of the highest quality for presenters and attendees,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “We are excited about the enthusiastic feedback we’re receiving about the meeting theme—‘Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action’—and look forward to holding a vibrant and rewarding convening in Philadelphia.”
