April 2017 Session Immediately Followed by AERA Fiesta!
The 2017 Annual Meeting will formally kick off with an engaging event featuring three college leaders exploring the premises and purposes of higher education during these challenging times.
A panel of three higher education leaders—Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president, Texas A&M University San Antonio; Michael A. Olivas, interim president, University of Houston; and Jonathan D. Jansen, former vice-chancellor, University of the Free State in South Africa—will address the many challenges and complexities facing higher education in a world that is increasingly divided by racial, social, and political tensions. The session will be moderated by Katherine Mangan, senior writer at the Chronicle of Higher Education.
“On campuses across the United States and worldwide, there are growing concerns about equity, justice, and civility that reflect broader societal tensions,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Immigration, DACA, racial equality, and tolerance for others are just some of the issues roiling campuses and the larger world. This special session will delve into these important issues.”
Immediately following the plenary, registered meeting attendees and special invited guests are invited to stay for AERA Fiesta!, a celebratory party welcoming all to San Antonio.
