AERA 2018 Election – Voting Opens February 12
On February 12, AERA will open the 2018 election with voting conducted by electronic ballot. Voting members will receive a personalized link by e-mail to access their ballot. All voting members are urged to exercise their right to vote.
William Trent, Linda Tuhiwai Smith Announced as Annual Meeting Speakers
AERA President Deborah Loewenberg Ball has announced prominent scholars William Trent and Linda Tuhiwai Smith as major speakers at the 2018 Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held on April 13–17 in New York City.
AERA Member Wins Grawemeyer Award
AERA member Sara Goldrick-Rab (Temple University) has been selected as the 2018 Grawemeyer Award in Education recipient by the University of Louisville.

House Committee Holds Hearing on Evidence-Based Policymaking and Privacy for Students
On January 30, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing on "Protecting Privacy, Promoting Policy: Evidence-Based Policymaking and the Future of Education." 
Woodworth Appointed as NCES Commissioner
President Donald Trump announced the appointment of James Lynn Woodworth to serve as Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) on January 4. He will be serving as the first permanent NCES commissioner since 2014. 
Revised Common Rule Implementation Delayed Until July 19
The federal agencies that are subject to the requirements of the Common Rule announced in the Federal Register on January 22 that the implementation of the updated regulations would be delayed until July 19.
Chief Statistician Issues Request for Information on Combining Data for Statistical and Research Purposes
Chief Statistician of the United States Nancy Potok and the Office of Management and Budget’s Statistical and Science Policy Branch are working to establish priorities and coordinate research efforts across the federal statistical system.
National Science Board Releases 2018 Science and Engineering Indicators
On January 18 the National Science Board, the presidentially appointed advisory body to the National Science Foundation, released the 2018 edition of its Science and Engineering Indicators.
IES Principal Investigators Gather for Annual Conference
On January 9–10, the Institute of Education Sciences hosted its annual Principal Investigators Meeting for grants funded by the National Center for Education Research and the National Center for Special Education Research.
FY 2018 Funding Extended to February 8 After Three-Day Shutdown
Final funding numbers for the 2018 fiscal year are still up in the air, as Congress passed a three-week continuing resolution (CR) following the expiration of the previous CR on January 19 and a three-day government shutdown.
