Dear Division D Members,

The annual meeting in New York City is only a few weeks away. The Division D Officers, our Secretary, and all Division D committees have been hard at work preparing a stimulating annual conference, adjudicating awards, organizing events for graduate students and early career scholars, organizing the Business meeting, and preparing this Newsletter!! I want to thank them all for their diligent work throughout year. Thank you!

In the paragraphs below I summarize a few changes we have made in the name of the Division and its structure, and bring to your attention a few topics related to the annual meeting.

Changes in Division D

First, the Business Meeting is changed from a luncheon to an afternoon meeting followed by a reception. The Division D Executive Council decided to make the Business Meeting more accessible and promote greater participation without the burden of purchasing tickets. We still need you to sign up for the meeting and reception so that we can order the right amount of hors d’oeuvres and drinks for the reception. During this part of the program we will inform the membership of the activities of Division D and give awards in four categories. As the outgoing Vice President of the Division, I will also be giving a keynote address titled, Potential and Challenges in Using Process Data for Advancing Educational Measurement. After the keynote address, we will have an opportunity to mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks. The event is scheduled for April 14, 4:05pm to 6:05pm in the Westin New York at Times Square, 5th floor, Majestic II room, and is open to all Division D members. Please mark your calendars.

The second change we are making is to the Dissertation Award. During its 2017 meeting, Division D Executive Committee noted that the current Outstanding Quantitative Dissertation Award has been limited to mostly theoretical development in quantitative methodology and measurement topics. While the Division D Early Career Award rotates across three fields, namely, Quantitative Research Methodology, Qualitative Research Methodology, and Measurement, the Dissertation Award has not included Qualitative
Research Methodology. Accordingly, the Division D Dissertation Committee changed the award from the Outstanding Quantitative Dissertation Award to the Outstanding Dissertation Award and revised the call for the Award nomination to cover all areas in Division D and further assure the quality of the nominated dissertation pool.

Established in 1965, Division D is one of the first four AERA Divisions. Its initial focus on quantitative methodology reflects the dominant methodological approaches at that time. During the last four decades the importance of qualitative, multiple and mixed methodologies in educational research have been widely recognized. As the Division that supports and promotes the study of research and measurement methodologies, two years ago we established an Ad Hoc Committee to review the Division’s activities, awards, communication, and focus with respect to the representation of diversity of methodologies. Based on the recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee and the Executive Committee, we have decided to make some changes to names of the Division and sections and add a fourth section. These changes are summarized below.

Annual meeting

Policy and Practice Outreach Program

As part of the Policy and Practice Outreach Program, AERA provides complimentary Annual Meeting registration to local educators and policy makers who live in the New York City area and are interested in participating in the annual meeting. Please get in touch with me [] if you have suggestions for who we might invite to participate in the Division D program for one day of the annual meeting.

Division D Receptions

We have a conference program that combines opportunities for disseminating our research, learning from others’ research, and engaging in discussions with social events
and mentorship activities. We will have three receptions, one after our Business Meeting (Saturday April 14, 4:05 – 6:05 pm), a second one hosted by our International and Mentoring Committees (Monday April 16, 6:15 – 7:45), and a joint reception with NCME (Saturday April 14, 6:30 – 8:00 pm). Please check the official program for details.


Conference program

As in previous years, we will be sending out a separate electronic Division D program so that members can more easily scan the Division sessions. Similar to last year, we will also create a program that includes both NCME and Division D programs. Look for this in your email in the coming weeks.


Before closing I want to thank organizations who have confirmed their sponsorship of our graduate student and early career mentorship activities: American Institutes for Research, Center for Assessment, Educational Testing Service, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson Educational Measurement, and Renaissance Learning. I am grateful for their support. Without them we would not be able to continue our activities that are very valuable to graduate students and early career scholars.

Finally, this is my final Newsletter entry as my term ends as Vice President of Division D. It has been my honor and pleasure to represent and serve our Division. Thank you for electing me, for your trust in me, and for giving me an opportunity to serve the field of measurement and research methodology. I congratulate Cindy Walker for her election as the incoming Vice President of Division D. She has my and the Executive Committee’s full support in leading the Division and engaging the Division in stimulating, effective activities.
