AERA Fellow Alfredo Artiles began a four-year term as president of the National Academy of Education (NAEd) on November 8. He was inaugurated during the NAEd Annual Meeting, succeeding Carol D. Lee, a past president of AERA.
Artiles, the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University in the Graduate School of Education, is a leading scholar in disability policy. His research explores how protections tied to disability status can stratify educational opportunities for minoritized groups and shape responses to these inequities.
In NAEd’s announcement, Lee praised Artiles, noting he “is the right leader to guide the NAEd through this period of profound change in education policy.”
Artiles is editor of the book series Disability Futures in Worlds of Difference (Harvard University Press) and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and a fellow of the National Education Policy Center. He has received AERA’s Palmer O. Johnson Award and the Review of Research Award, and delivered the 14th Annual Brown Lecture in Education Lecture in 2019.
“Dr. Artiles brings a visionary perspective and a deep commitment to equity in education,” said AERA Executive Director Tabbye Chavous. “We look forward to working closely with him and NAEd to expand the impact and reach of education research.”
Artiles earned his MEd in Special Education and PhD in Education from the University of Virginia.
