Daniel Willingham is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Psychology Department at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the translation of principles from cognitive science to classroom practice in P-16 education.

Dr. Willingham started his career as a basic scientist, exploring the brain basis of memory and, in particular, how to characterize various subsystems of human memory. His work in education began in 2002, when he was invited to write a regular feature for American Educator magazine, “Ask the Cognitive Scientist,” a column he continues to write today. By 2007 all of Dr. Willingham’s research focused on translation, and although he continues to publish in academic journals, most of his writing is directed to teachers and administrators. Dr. Willingham’s writing also appears regularly in the popular press, including Scientific American and The New York Times. He is the author of several books, most recently The Reading Mind, and his writing on education has appeared in sixteen languages.

Dr. Willingham’s scholarship has been recognized by awards and fellowship in several national organizations, and in 2017 he appointed by President Obama to serve as a Member of the National Board for Education Sciences.
