** Media Advisory ** Prominent Scholar Sylvia Hurtado to Address Racial Bias and Exclusion in Higher Education in 2021 AERA Distinguished Lecture
WHAT
Sylvia Hurtado, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), will give the American Educational Research Association’s 2021 Distinguished Lecture on September 30. Rescheduled from the AERA Virtual Annual Meeting in April, the lecture is titled “The Inevitability of Racial Bias and Exclusion: Implications for Identity-Based Education and Practice.”
AERA Past President Shaun R. Harper will offer an introduction. The lecture will be followed by an open discussion with Q&A from attendees.
This event will be held virtually and is open to the public at no cost. ASL and captioning will be provided.
About Hurtado’s Talk
Marginalized racial/ethnic identity groups endure racial profiling, are targets of hate crimes, and are often viewed not as individuals but as faceless masses on a daily basis—even in classrooms. Hurtado personalizes “facelessness” using research on campus racial climates and Latinx experiences, articulating how our tendencies toward recognition bias are perpetuated and reinforced at the individual and institutional levels in education. She articulates the need for identity-based education, re-humanizing practices, and increased specificity to target racial equity aims in higher education.

WHO
Sylvia Hurtado is a professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and its division of Higher Education and Organizational Change. Her scholarship focuses on student educational outcomes, campus racial climates, and equity and inclusion in higher education.
Hurtado served as director of the Higher Education Research Institute (UCLA) for over a decade and is a past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Her recent national projects include research on how colleges are preparing students to participate in a diverse democracy (U.S. Department of Education), the pathways for underrepresented students in scientific research and professional careers (National Institutes of Health/National Science Foundation), and student and institutional outcomes of diverse and broad-access institutions in higher education (Ford Foundation).
Hurtado is a graduate of UCLA (Ph.D.), the Harvard Graduate School of Education (M.Ed.), and Princeton University (A.B.).
