Stella M. Flores is an Associate Professor of Higher Education at New York University. She is also Director of Access and Equity at the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy at NYU. A scholar of inequality in the pathway to higher education, her work examines demographic changes in schools and the nation and how public polices affect the educational pathways of low-income and under-served minority students from kindergarten to college graduation.

Dr. Flores's current research examines what factors comprise the racial college completion gap, using numerous K-20 datasets that can account for a student’s individual, academic, high school, and community context. Her focus on state policies across the nation provides important information on how ladders of opportunity differ for students based on the local policy and school environments in which they are raised, particularly for immigrant and English Learner students. Her co-authored research on admissions policies has informed various U.S. Supreme Court decisions about the efficiency and effectiveness of college admissions.

She has lectured on equity issues regarding college access at various universities in Chile, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, and Spain. Dr. Flores serves on multiple editorial boards, has advised national policy groups and commissions, and was named one of the Top 25 Women in Higher Education and Beyond. Her work has been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Boston Globe, Univision, USA Today, Education Week, and a variety of other multi-audience networks including Spanish language press and radio.

Dr. Flores received her Ed.D. and Ed.M. from Harvard University, M.P.Aff. from the University of Texas at Austin, and BA from Rice University.
