AERA Statement on Providing Our Support for the Victims of the Turkey and Syria Earthquakes

February 14, 2023

The destruction caused by the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria earlier this month has created immense pain and hardship for millions of people in the region. We express our concern for our colleagues, students, educators, and all people throughout Turkey and Syria who are experiencing significant loss of life, pain, trauma, and suffering.

With educational institutions remaining closed and students and families displaced from their homes, it is imperative we support and aid those affected amid these challenging times and anticipate how we as a research association can assist the needs of students, educators, and staffs.

In alliance with the Turkish Educational Research Association, the European Educational Research Association, and the World Education Research Association, AERA is encouraging those who can contribute to help all individuals affected by the earthquake and in protecting the health and safety of children, youth, and adults in the region. One credible source is Charity Navigator, which offers information about different organizations and ways to contribute. Individuals may also wish to consider donations to the International Red Cross/Red Crescent.

We must come together during the coming weeks and months to help devastated communities and educational institutions rebuild, regain a sense of wellbeing, and find pathways to new beginnings. Our thoughts are with all who are suffering during this very difficult time.
