March 2017 On April 12, the sixth and final Lecture and Open Forum in the initial AERA Centennial Series will feature Russell Skiba (Indiana University), who will present on “The Limits of Schooling, The Power of Poverty.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, in Boston, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Skiba, a Professor in the School Psychology program and Director of the Equity Project at Indiana University, will address controversial zero-tolerance discipline policies that have failed to guarantee school safety or improve student behavior, have placed students at risk for further negative short- and long-term outcomes, and have disproportionately targeted students by race, class, disability, and sexual orientation. He will analyze research on school discipline reform and explore key issues that will inform next steps for keeping schools safe without sacrificing students
Skiba’s brief lecture will be followed by an open forum with experts from the Boston area and attendees. The discussion will be moderated by Deborah Becker Mclennan, senior correspondent and host for WBUR Boston public radio.
The AERA Centennial Lecture Series aims to bring innovative education research and leading scholars to cities across the United States to engage in public discussion with area leaders. AERA Highlights readers are encouraged to register, offer feedback, and share news of these upcoming lectures.
