Registration for the 20th Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research, featuring Leslie T. Fenwick, opened this month. This year’s lecture, titled “Otherwise Qualified: The Untold Story of Brown and Black Educators’ Professional Superiority,” will take place on Thursday, October 19, from 6:00 to 7:45 p.m. ET.

Fenwick, professor and dean emerita at Howard University and dean-in-residence at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, will explore the untold story of how the implementation of Brown has maintained segregationists’ control over the nation’s public schools, to the detriment of all students, especially Black students. Her talk will immediately lead into a moderated discussion forum with an opportunity for Q&A.

The Brown Lecture is open to the public and there is no cost to attend. The in-person event will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. It will be followed by a reception. The lecture and discussion will also be livestreamed.

Those who wish to attend in-person can register online to request a ticket. All in-person attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 (with up to one booster, if eligible), and provide proof of vaccination through SafeAccess, a third-party health and safety platform.

After registrants have filled out the form for an in-person ticket, an email will be sent from SafeAccess with a link that will prompt them to upload a photo of their COVID vaccination cards.

In the case of medical exemptions, registrants will need to provide SafeAccess with a letter on appropriate medical or health provider letterhead signed by the medical provider stipulating that the registrant, due to health conditions, cannot be vaccinated or boosted for COVID-19. In the case of religious exemptions, registrants will need to provide SafeAccess with a signed letter of attestation by the registrant stipulating that, for religious reasons, they cannot be vaccinated or boosted for COVID-19.

Once approved, attendees will receive an email from AERA with a copy of their personalized ticket. Because the verification process requires that each attendee be reviewed individually, tickets are not transferable. Livestream registration is also available.
