Two visitors, Phoebe H. Stevenson and Joyce Alexander, are joining the AERA staff for 2022–23. Stevenson joined on September 1 as senior adviser for operations, infrastructure, finance, and technology; Alexander will join on October 1 as dean-in-residence.
Stevenson previously served as AERA’s deputy executive director from 2002 to 2012. During her current time at the association, she will focus on AERA operations, the strategic management of human and material resources, and modes and models of organizational effectiveness, including enhanced technology and systems integration.
“Special attention to these issues is particularly important as AERA transitions from the most pernicious phase of the COVID period,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine.
During the last decade, Stevenson worked in higher education leadership roles. Most immediately, she served as senior associate dean and chief business officer at the School of Law at Emory University. Earlier, she was administrative dean and chief of operations for the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University. Stevenson has an EdD in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.
As dean-in-residence, Alexander will work with AERA at the national level on education research policy issues and related programmatic and infrastructural considerations. An accomplished STEM researcher with extensive experience in K–12 partnerships, she will draw upon her expertise in AERA representational roles and activities that advance our attention to STEM education research across educational levels, including AERA’s own training initiatives.
“Also, a priority as we evolve from COVID,” Levine said, “is working with our ed school deans who constitute AERA’s Consortium of University and Research Institutions (CURI); Joyce is a perfect fit.”
Alexander served as the dean of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University from 2015 to 2021 and continues as a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology. Prior to Texas A&M, she served as executive associate dean for the School of Education at Indiana University. Alexander received her PhD in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.
