September 2019

AERA Open has released a special topic call for papers on educational data science. The accepted submissions will be assembled with an introduction by guest editors Daniel McFarland (Stanford), Ben Domingue (Stanford), and Zachary Pardos (UC Berkeley). The submission deadline is June 1, 2020.

AERA Open Special Topic Submissions Timeline:
Call for Papers: September 30, 2019
Paper Submissions Deadline: June 1, 2020 [Editor's Note: Due to Covid-19, this deadline was extended to October 1, 2020]

Much of the nascent work in educational data science as a field has centered around learning and has targeted learning audiences in computer science and engineering. The goal of this AERA Open special topic call is to showcase the best of this ongoing genre of research and to broaden the scope of data science applications to include work on diverse topics and frameworks related to education and learning, much of which is being generated by interdisciplinary scholars and educational domain experts.

The editors also encourage authors to submit their papers to the related AERA Satellite Conference on Educational Data Science, to be held at Stanford University on April 22–23, 2020, in collaboration with AERA. Papers presented at the conference may be subsequently revised for the AERA Open special topic call and June 1 deadline (see related Highlights story “AERA Satellite Conference to Examine Educational Data Science”).

Please direct questions regarding the special topic to Daniel McFarland (mcfarland@stanford.edu), Ben Domingue (bdomingu@stanford.edu), or Zachary Pardos (zp@berkeley.edu). Please consult the AERA Open website for general guidelines on manuscript submission.
