May 2025

At the 2025 Annual Meeting, AERA honored 62 scholars as the 2024 Outstanding Reviewers for their exemplary service to AERA’s journals. These individuals were formally recognized at a special ceremony for their exceptional contributions to maintaining the scholarly excellence of AERA journals through their peer review efforts.

This ceremony is a central feature of the AERA Publications Reception, an event that celebrates the achievements of AERA’s Publications Program, including the work of editors and committee members. The event drew a large audience, with the proceedings led by Peter Youngs, chair of the Journal Publications Committee; Felice Levine, AERA executive director; and John Neikirk, AERA director of publications.

Given the selective nature of the Outstanding Reviewer awards, the editors of AERA’s six serial journals identified 62 exemplary reviewers for the quality of their reviews and service to AERA journals in 2024. These honorees were chosen for their high-caliber and consistent contributions to a rigorous peer review process. Many reviewers serve across multiple journals; for 2024, David Blazar and Julie Cohen were recognized by two journals for their outstanding reviews.

The full list of outstanding reviewers for 2024 is provided below.

The event also celebrated AERA’s Books Program, with particular emphasis on the launch of the second edition of the Handbook of Education Policy Research. Edited by Lora Cohen-Vogel, Peter Youngs, and Janelle Scott, the volume is the largest and most comprehensive publication in AERA’s history.

In addition to honoring reviewers, the ceremony recognized the dedication of the current and outgoing editorial teams. Several outgoing teams were presented with commemorative plaques for their leadership:

  • AERA Open (2022–2024): Editor-in-Chief Kara Finnigan, with Co-Editors Terah Venzant Chambers, Stella Flores, Michal Kurlaender, Elizabeth Birr Moje, and Michele Moses
  • American Educational Research Journal (2020–2024): Editor-in-Chief Ellen Goldring, with Co-Editors Angela Calabrese Barton, Sean Kelly, Madeline Mavrogordato, V. Paul Poteat, and Peter Youngs
  • Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics (2020–2024): Editor-in-Chief Steven Culpepper. Co-Editors Gongjun Xu and Minjeong Jeon (with Jeon’s term having begun in July 2024) will continue serving through 2027.
