June 2022

AERA encourages submissions for participation in the 2023 Annual Meeting. In offering place-based and virtual components, the association hopes to bring forth paper and session submissions that will expand the breadth of knowledge in education research as a field. Consonant with the 2023 Presidential theme, “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth,” AERA envisions the dual components as creating space for strands of work and innovative or novel research that may have been crowded out by space limitations.

Like the theme itself, the Call for Submissions encourages paper and session submissions that bring to the fore diverse theoretical, methodological, and subfield or disciplinary perspectives. The number of roundtable allocations for papers will expand in 2023, and place-based poster sessions will be featured in scheduling the program and will include large-screen, high-definition electronic monitors rather than thumbtacks and poster boards.

The dual components of the 2023 Annual Meeting will go well beyond addressing COVID-19 and its variants. Chicago is a gateway city, nationally and internationally, and the virtual component offers the education research community across continents and hemispheres affordable and engaged opportunities to present and connect with the research.

Those presenting at or attending the virtual component of the meeting on May 4–5 will have access to major place-based sessions that will be live web-streamed to the online platform for viewing by registrants not in Chicago. The virtual component of the meeting will also include, through the platform, special high-profile sessions of national and international interest. Those attending the Chicago meeting in person will have access to these and other virtual sessions.

“The 2022 Annual Meeting was a big success for online-only attendees and for place-based attendees, who also had the option to participate in sessions on the platform,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Building on that success, we are thrilled to create a dual-component experience for 2023 that will be accessible, flexible, and rewarding for all participants. Both components of the 2023 meeting will provide presenters with an unparalleled opportunity to share their work and engage with the scholarly community.”

As set forth in the Call for Submissions, those submitting papers or sessions will make a choice at the outset whether they wish to present in Chicago or on the virtual platform, if their submission is accepted.

  • Accepted sessions will be scheduled in the component (place-based or virtual) as submitted by the session organizer.
  • Papers accepted for paper or roundtable sessions will be placed in place-based or virtual sessions based on submission preference.
  • Papers accepted for place-based poster presentations will be scheduled for poster sessions in Chicago and will receive elevated visibility at their scheduled times.
  • Papers accepted as virtual posters will include recorded presentations and will always be accessible in the AERA i-Presentation Gallery; authors will have the option of scheduling additional live chats or video meetings at their own preferred times, if they wish.

At the time of submission, prospective presenters will choose whether accepted work will be presented in Chicago or on the virtual platform; there will be no subsequent changes in where the accepted work will be presented.

The submission deadline is July 27, 11:59 p.m. PT.
