AERA Fellow and former Council member Okhee Lee has been appointed to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) for a three-year term.
Lee, a professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, is widely known for advancing research, policy, and practice that simultaneously promote science and language learning for all students, particularly multilingual learners. She was named an AERA Fellow in 2009 and served as an AERA Council member-at-large from 2019 to 2022.
Lee received the 2003 AERA Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award and the 2021 AERA Exemplary Contributions to Practice-Engaged Research Award. She was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2022.
CEOSE advises NSF on policies, programs, and practices that encourage the participation of women, persons with disabilities, and racial/ethnic groups underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The committee members come from diverse STEM disciplines and are drawn from diverse institutions in higher education, industry, government, and nonprofit sectors.
“Dr. Lee’s work addressing justice-centered STEM education makes her incredibly deserving of this appointment,” said AERA Executive Director Felice Levine. “We’re looking forward to further collaborating with Dr. Lee and the committee to address pressing challenges for equity in the STEM fields.”
Lee begins her appointment on February 1.
