On August 3, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that AERA Fellow James L. Moore III would head its Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). According to NSF, EHR “supports research that enhances teaching and learning, and broad efforts to achieve excellence in STEM education at all levels and in all settings.” Moore began his NSF appointment on August 22.

Moore, a member of the 2021 cohort of AERA Fellows, is one of the country’s leading scholars examining the educational experiences of students of color. Prior to joining NSF, Moore was vice provost for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer at Ohio State University (OSU). He also served as the first executive director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and is Distinguished Professor of Urban Education in the College of Education and Human Ecology at OSU.

“We congratulate Dr. Moore on this richly deserved appointment,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “NSF has made a great choice of a scholar and an experienced higher education leader at a pivotal point in time for science, the scientific workforce, and our broader society. We look forward to working with Dr. Moore in supporting NSF’s efforts to advance education research knowledge and build a robust, diverse, and inclusive STEM research community.”

Moore has published a broad body of work that is foundational to the field and that has been honored by national organizations including AERA, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the College Board, and the National Association for Gifted Children.

Moore received his bachelor’s degree from Delaware State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Virginia Tech.
