April 2019

On April 4, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) announced the introduction of the Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act of 2019. AERA is a supporter of the legislation.

The Senate bill is a companion to the House bill, H.R. 36, which Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Frank Lucas (R-OK) introduced in January, and which is also strongly supported by AERA.

As with the House bill, the Senate legislation would address sexual harassment in the sciences by providing funding for additional research and encouraging uniform policy guidelines at federal agencies that award more than $100 million in research grants. The Senate legislation would also extend the class of targeted sexual harassment to include sexual orientation or pregnancy status.

Both bills have been referred to committees and have not yet received consideration.
