November 2017

AERA joined a diverse coalition of 11 national research and scientific alliances and organizations for an advertising, social media, and grassroots campaign during the week of November 12–17, urging Congress to negotiate a bipartisan budget deal that raises spending caps before end of the year.

The #RaisetheCaps campaign connected the role of federally-funded research in making the United States the global leader in science, technology, and innovation with Congress having flexibility to increase funding for science. The initiative included print ads in the Wall Street Journal, Politico, Washington Examiner, and Weekly Standard; digital ads in several Capitol Hill and other politically-focused DC media outlets; and social media and grassroots activities.

The campaign was complemented by a November 14 letter from the leaders of research and science organizations to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his counterparts in congressional leadership, making the case for a budget deal.

In addition to AERA, partnering organizations included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geophysical Union, American Physical Society, Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, March for Science, National Association for Biomedical Research, OSA-The Optical Society, Research!America, Society for Neuroscience, and Supporters of Agriculture Research.
