Are you interested in running for an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Graduate Student Council (GSC) office?

AERA GSC is a great way to get involved, network and learn more about AERA. If you’d like to work with a great group of graduate students from across the world, to serve the 7,000+ graduate students in AERA, we hope you will consider running. The nomination information, election timeline, and terms of service and responsibilities for these positions are detailed below.

The five elected positions on the Graduate Student Council are:

GSC ELECTED POSITIONS

CHAIR-ELECT 

The Chair-Elect position is a three-year term.

  • Must be a graduate student during Chair-Elect and Chair years; may serve as the Past-Chair after graduation
  • Must be a member of AERA
  • Prior experience with the GSC is a plus but not required

 Responsibilities, Year 1 (as Chair-Elect):

  • Plan and coordinate the Graduate Student Resource Center and Registration booth at the annual meeting
  • Plan and chair the Chair-Elect’s Fireside Chat session(s) at the annual meeting
  • Attend the October Coordinated Committee meeting in Washington, DC
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • Attend AERA Council meeting at the annual meeting in year rising to Chair position
  • Prepare article for each issue of the Graduate Student Newsletter
  • Prepare Chair-Elect annual report
  • Assist GSC Chair in creation of a budget for GSC
  • Assume responsibilities of Chair if Chair is unable to complete his/her term of office
  • Assist other GSC officers in planning new GSC initiatives and programs for graduate students across AERA; support and become involved in these new AERA GSC initiatives

 Responsibilities, Year 2 (as Chair):

  • Set agenda for GSC activities/meeting for the year
  • Designate and work with the Program Chair and Community Leader to plan GSC sessions for the annual meeting and coordinate campus liaisons
  • Direct and work with all GSC elected officers and Division Representatives
  • Create GSC budget for the upcoming year and submit to AERA
  • Attend AERA Council meetings in June, February and April
  • Attend Coordinated Committee Meeting in Washington, DC in October; chair GSC during this meeting, including agenda setting
  • Plan and chair the Chair’s Fireside Chat session(s) at the annual meeting
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.); chair GSC business meetings, including agenda setting
  • Report the pertinent actions and events occurring at all Association Council, and GSC Executive Committee meetings to the GSC
  • Prepare article for each issue of the Graduate Student Council Newsletter
  • Prepare GSC Annual Report for submission to AERA
  • Prepare pass-down materials for incoming Chair

 Responsibilities, Year 3 (as Past Chair):

  • Chair the nominating committee, to assemble slate for election of new GSC officers
  • Plan and chair the Past Chair’s Fireside Chat session(s) at the annual meeting
  • Attend the Coordinated Committee Meeting in Washington, DC in October
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • Serve in advisory capacity to GSC Chair and Chair-Elect

JR. NEWSLETTER EDITOR

The Jr. Newsletter editor serves a two-year term.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduate student through at least the end of the Fall semester of the second year of service
  • Must be a member of AERA

 Responsibilities:

  • Manage and edit the GSC newsletters; this is a collaborative position between the senior and junior editors
  • Produce summer, fall, and spring issues of the GSC newsletter
  • Disseminate call, select, and layout for submissions for each issue
  • Submit completed issue to GSC Web Secretary for publication on GSC website and email dissemination
  • Submit annual report on newsletter activities
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • As senior editor (year 2), attend Coordinated Committee Meeting in Washington, DC in October
  • Assist other GSC officers in planning new GSC initiatives and programs for graduate students across AERA; support and become involved in these new AERA GSC initiatives

SECRETARY/HISTORIAN 

The Secretary/Historian serves a one-year term and is responsible for record keeping for the GSC.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduate student for the entire year of service
  • Must be a member of AERA

Responsibilities:

  • Attend the Coordinated Committee Meeting in Washington, DC in October
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • Record minutes for all GSC meetings
  • Disseminate minutes to GSC within thirty days of the meeting date
  • Act as GSC historian; collect photographs of GSC events; make these available to Web Secretary and Newsletter Editors; maintain updated version of GSC history
  • Maintain contact information for all GSC members
  • Submit annual report on activities for the year
  • Assist other GSC officers in planning new GSC initiatives and programs for graduate students across AERA; support and become involved in these new AERA GSC initiatives

SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE EDITOR 

The Social Media and Website Editor serves a one-year term and works with the AERA Central Office to maintain the GSC website.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduate student for the entire year of service
  • Must be a member of AERA

 Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain GSC website
  • Moderate GSC social media
  • Get trained on latest AERA web software
  • Keep in contact with AERA web personnel about changes and other issues related to the GSC website
  • Keep GSC updated about AERA web issues, concerns, priorities, feedback, etc.
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • Assist other GSC officers in planning new GSC initiatives and programs for graduate students across AERA; support and become involved in these new AERA GSC initiatives

JUNIOR CAMPUS OUTREACH COORDINATOR 

The Junior Campus Outreach Coordinator will serve a two-year term and will be responsible primarily for assisting in running the GSC Campus Liaison program to serve the graduate student membership of AERA.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduate student through at least the end of the Fall semester of the second year of service
  • Must be a member of AERA

 Responsibilities:

  • Provide programming for liaisons and graduate student members both at the Annual Meeting and throughout the year
  • Disseminate information sent by the Campus Outreach Coordinator to interested graduate students on their campuses                                                     
  • Maintain and update the GSC Campus Liaison database
  • Maintain an active Campus Liaison network through various activities
  • Hold regular meetings with liaisons
  • Attend major GSC events at annual meeting (business meetings, orientations, etc.)
  • Assist other GSC officers in planning new GSC initiatives and programs for graduate students across AERA; support and become involved in these new AERA GSC initiatives
