2017 Recipient

Henry M. Levin
Teachers College, Columbia University

Dr. Henry Levin, David Jacks Professor of Higher Education and Economics, Emeritus, at Stanford University, and William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, is among the nation’s most influential and productive economists of education. For six decades, Dr. Levin has been a prolific scholar whose groundbreaking research has systematically explored the ways that markets and competition influence the effectiveness of schools and the cost of inadequate education. Dr. Levin is recognized as a model scholar of education research for his record of significant publications with the most prestigious academic journals and presses, his broad cross-disciplinary and international influence, and his continuing efforts to use research to influence policy and practice.

This award is given to honor a meritorious contributor to educational research; its purpose is to publicize, motivate, encourage, and suggest models for educational research at its best.

From 1964 through 1973 the award was given jointly with Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) and was known as the AERA-PDK Awards. After 1974 AERA took sole responsibility for making the selection.
