July 2026
AERA and the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) will host two free July workshops in the Partnership for Expanding Education Research in STEM (PEERS) Series in STEM Data and Data Use, highlighting longitudinal datasets and data systems that can support STEM education research.
The webinar series features workshops that introduce researchers to publicly available datasets and analytic tools that can be used to examine important questions in STEM education through quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches. Led by experts in education research, psychometrics, and the social sciences, the workshops explore the design, structure, and potential uses of large-scale student level, school, and administrative datasets.
The upcoming July webinars include:
Learning Opportunities Early and Often: Longitudinal Findings from the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development July 16 | 12:00 p.m. ET
Registration
Andres Bustamante (University of California, Irvine), Eric Dearing (Boston College), and Deborah Vandell (University of California, Irvine) will share how researchers can use the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD), a 26-year longitudinal dataset following children from birth, to investigate how developmental and educational experiences shape learning across childhood and adolescence.
The presenters will discuss how they identified and accessed the dataset, selected variables and analytic approaches to address STEM education research questions, and developed a sustained research collaboration using longitudinal data. Their collaboration around the data has produced several peer-reviewed journal articles. The workshop is designed for graduate students, early career researchers, and scholars interested in using longitudinal datasets to support STEM education research.
Unleash the Power of SLDS: Preschool through Grade 20 Datasets for STEM Research July 23 | 12:00 p.m. ET
Beth Kelly (KYSTATS), Rachel Leventhal-Weiner (DataLinkCT), and Tod Massa (Virginia Longitudinal Data System), with moderator Nancy Sharkey, will explore how State Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS), also known as P20W systems, provide researchers with opportunities to examine educational pathways from early learning through postsecondary education and into the workforce.
The webinar will highlight the types of data available through state systems, how researchers can access and use these resources, privacy protections, and publicly available tools and dashboards. The session is intended for graduate students, early career researchers, and established scholars interested in using longitudinal data to study STEM education issues.
