The 2027 AERA Annual Meeting Presidential Program Committee met May 19–21 in Toronto to begin planning for the 2027 Annual Meeting, themed “Transcending Borders and Boundaries in Education Research: Toward a Beloved Global Community.”
Led by AERA President Jerome E. Morris, Program Co-Chairs Jennifer Keys Adair and Ayanna F. Brown, and Executive Director Tabbye Chavous, the committee focused on developing session ideas with the Annual Meeting theme and identifying priorities for inclusive and globally engaged programming.
Discussion highlighted inclusivity goals, including multi- and intergenerational perspectives, improving access in international contexts, and strengthening collaboration with Toronto-based scholars and organizations.
Committee members also explored potential presidential session topics, including communal mental health, non-U.S. contexts in epistemological approaches, government constraints on intellectual inquiry, and community rebuilding.
The committee will continue refining presidential sessions through the summer with designated session leads.
Prior to the meeting, Morris, Chavous, and program co-chairs met with 32 AERA members from the Toronto region to gather input for presidential and regional spotlight programming. Participants represented a range of institutions, research specialties, and career stages. Themes from the discussion included Indigenous-centered priorities in Canadian education, Ontario-specific issues, cross-border collaboration, and community- and land-based learning approaches.
“Our meeting in Toronto led to excellent discussions that will help shape next year’s Annual Meeting,” said AERA Executive Director Tabbye Chavous. “We’re excited to present a program that reflects the goals of the 2027 theme and creates meaningful opportunities for scholarly exchange and community.”
