Message from the Chair:

Welcome to the Second Language Research SIG website!

Our SIG promotes community and collaboration among early career, mid-career and senior scholars and practitioners interested in research, teaching and service focused on such issues as second, bilingual/two-way immersion, heritage and world language learner experiences in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and higher educational contexts, teacher education, pedagogy, curriculum and programming, gaming and technology, policy, assessment, and a range of subtopics within these. Our members’ scholarly footprints span languages and literacies in educational, community and policy contexts around the world.

In Fall 2021 we co-hosted a two-part symposium: Revisiting and (Re)imagining Castañeda v. Pickard (1981): Past, Present and Future (co-sponsored with the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG and the Bilingual Education Research SIG).  2021 marked the 40th anniversary of the landmark Castañeda v. Pickard (1981) federal court case in the United States that led to the creation of federal guidelines for advocates, lawyers and Office of Civil Rights (OCR) on the minimum requirements to implement bilingual education programs.

Session I: September 10 2021 featured contributing authors of a Special Issue of Language Policy commemorating the 40th anniversary of Castañeda v. Pickard (1981), co-edited by Oscar Jimenez-Castellanos, Ph.D., Eugene García, Ph.D., and Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Ph.D.

Session 2: September 17 2021 offered participants opportunities to discuss and strategize around topics addressed in session 1.

We also enjoyed a strong in-person and virtual presence at this year’s AERA annual meeting held April 21-26, 2022. Our SIG’s program featured research presentations on several topics including, translanguaging pedagogies, advocacy for immigrant-origin youth, their teachers and families, English learners in higher education, English learners with disabilities, digital and online learning, to name a few. Other features included a Guided Tour of Chicano Park in San Diego, and the annual La Pachanga, co-sponsored with the Bilingual Education Research, Latina/o/x Issues Research, and Language and Social Processes SIGs. Finally, we had the honor of celebrating the 2022 SLR SIG award recipients at our business meeting on April 25, 2022.
