Call for Submission - Open May 31 and close on July 27, 2022

The deadline for submissions for the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting has been extended from July 27 to August 1. More

The AERA Second Language Research SIG solicits proposals for individual papers, symposia, and structured poster presentations aligned to the scholarly focus of the SIG and the 2023 AERA conference theme: “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth.”  The SIG invites evidence-based and theoretical work that has not been previously published or presented that advances our collective understanding of how language education has historically been complicit in promoting agendas that reinforce systemic oppression (e.g.: assimilationist, colonialist, settler-colonialist, white supremacist agendas), and how language research can be part of the solution. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • second language learning/teaching and bilingual/multilingual development,
  • language education policy and teacher education,
  • sociocultural and political contexts thereof, and
  • epistemological, methodological, and ontological dimensions of scholarship in these areas.

The SIG particularly welcomes work that includes educational stakeholders outside the Academy as equals in the processes of inquiry, implementation, reflection, and dissemination.

1. Please review the Call for Submissions
2. Log in

AERA 2022 Annual Meeting

Pre-Conference Mentoring Session for Graduate Students & Early-Career Scholars

Thursday, April 21, 2022, 8:00-9:30 am PDT

San Diego Convention Center, Upper Level, Room 4

The Second Language Research SIG is excited to announce its 7th annual mentoring program for graduate students and early-career faculty in our SIG. Mentees will be matched with mentors who have common scholarly interests and expertise in the areas of growth identified by the mentees. Our session will feature conversations on career development with more senior SLR SIG scholars as well as paired mentor-mentee discussions.

While this session is designed as a face-to-face event for those attending AERA in person, those attending the conference virtually, or who are unable to be present at the mentoring session, can apply to be a mentee or volunteer to serve as a mentor. These mentor-mentee pairs will meet at a mutually convenient time.

If you are a mid-career or senior SIG member, please consider volunteering to serve as a mentor! Complete this survey to indicate your interest as well as the areas of scholarship, teaching, or career development in which you feel comfortable advising others. Thank you for considering this important role!

We invite SIG members who are advanced (post-candidacy) graduate students or early-career faculty to complete this application. Please note that you will have to upload a PDF of your current CV. Mentee applications will be evaluated on inclusion of all relevant information and alignment of your scholarship to Second Language Research SIG interests. We also seek to ensure participants represent a range of interests, institutions, and geographic locations. If accepted, you will be paired with a scholar who can provide you with mentoring in your areas of interest.

Please complete your mentor survey or mentee application by March 15.  Pairs will be notified by late March.

We hope to see you there! Please see the flyer for additional details.
