Jason A. Grissom is Associate Professor of Public Policy and Education and (by courtesy) of Political Science at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. He serves as Faculty Director of the Tennessee Education Research Alliance, a research-policy-practice partnership that produces research to inform Tennessee’s school improvement efforts. He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of Educational Researcher, a leading journal of the American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Grissom’s research uses large-scale administrative and survey data—often coupled with data from interviews and observations—primarily to answer policy-relevant questions about school leadership, educator mobility, and the intersection of the two. He has authored studies on principal time use, the measurement of principal effects on achievement, principal evaluation, and principal turnover. Recent studies explore the strategic teacher retention of high-performing principals and how the widespread implementation of multiple-measure teacher evaluation systems are transforming the daily work of school principals. Dr. Grissom has ongoing projects on principal supervision, leaders’ development of instructional leadership expertise, principal preparation, how principals make human capital decisions in their schools, and the role of leadership diversity in diversifying the teacher workforce.

Dr. Grissom has won best-article awards from the Journal of Educational Administration and the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and also received the Wilder Award for Scholarship in Social Equity and Public Policy. He co-edited the 2016 book Improving Teacher Evaluation Systems: Making the Most of Multiple Measures (Teachers College Press). He holds a Master’s degree in Education and a PhD in Political Economics from Stanford University.
