Duncan, Olivas, Tienda, Noguera Highlight 2013 Annual Meeting

AERA is pleased to feature four distinguished invited speakers, including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, at the upcoming AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
On Tuesday, April 30, Secretary Duncan will present a special invited address followed by a Q&A session. Duncan has served as secretary of education since his confirmation by the U.S. Senate in 2009; prior to his nomination Duncan was chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools.

In addition to Duncan, key speakers for the Annual Meeting will address topics of racial inequality and equity in higher education, as well as K–12 language standards. On Saturday, April 27, Michael A. Olivas, the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Houston Law Center, will present the Opening Plenary Address, “Immigrant DREAMS Deferred.” Olivas is the author or coauthor of 14 books, including
The Dilemma of Access
and, most recently,
Suing Alma Mater,
on higher education and the U.S. Supreme Court.

On Monday, April 29, Marta Tienda, the Maurice P. During ’22 Professor in Demographic Studies at Princeton University, will present the Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture, “Diversity ≠ Inclusion: Translating Access Into Equity in Higher Education.” Tienda’s research focuses on issues of immigration, population diversification, and poverty and the roles they play in access to education and political participation.

Pedro A. Noguera, the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University, will present the AERA Distinguished Lecture, “Education, Racial Inequality, and the Future of American Democracy,” on Tuesday, April 30. Noguera is an urban sociologist whose scholarship and research focus on how schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the urban environment.
