AERA member Li Cai, an associate professor of education at the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and codirector of the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), has been honored as a Presidential Early Career Scientist for 2012. The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

In announcing the 2012 awards, the White House cited Cai’s contributions to improved measurement methods, particularly in the area of statistical computing. The award was established by President Clinton in 1996 to recognize individuals for their pursuit of innovative research and their commitment to community service.

Cai received the 2009 Outstanding Quantitative Dissertation Award from AERA’s Division D (Measurement and Research Methodology). He was also recognized as a 2010 Outstanding Reviewer Award for the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics.
