AERA has opened enrollment for the 2023 Doctoral Cohort Program. The program allows participating graduate programs from around the globe to offer special introductory AERA membership for first-year doctoral students. Through the program, all doctoral students—full time or part time—at participating institutions will pay dues of $29, down from the traditional $65 rate for graduate students, for their first year of membership. Their institutions, in turn, pay $18 for each student that joins through the program.

The program is part of AERA’s effort to support graduate institutions in their preparation of future researchers and teachers.

“We are pleased to again offer this important opportunity for graduate students to join the broader scholarly community, begin to build their research networks, and take advantage of the full array of AERA resources,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “For more than a decade, the program has helped to foster the aspirations of researchers at the starting point of their careers.”

Among the benefits for program participants are free membership in an AERA division, complimentary digital access to all seven AERA journals, attendance to the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting at the discounted student member registration fee, and more.

Faculty members and graduate students who would like to see their department or school participate in the program are encouraged to reach out to their dean or graduate director. To ensure a vibrant program, AERA asks that the school or department actively promote the program and recruit the entire first-year doctoral student cohort to join.

The AERA Doctoral Cohort Program is open to any graduate institution or program. Institutions have until March 2023 to sign up for the 2023 membership year. Only students who have not previously been a member of AERA are eligible to take part.

More than 500 students at 60 graduate programs joined AERA through the Doctoral Cohort Program in 2022.
