June 2024

The 2024 AERA Virtual Research Learning Series continues with the final course in the series on July 2. This webinar series included four professional development and training courses designed to increase research knowledge and expand research capacity. The first three courses were held on June 4, 11, and 27. Recordings of those courses will be made available in the Virtual Research Learning Center.

Putting Feelings Where They’re Useful: Using Emotions as Data in Qualitative Analysis

Hilary Lustick, Abeer Hakouz, and Xiaoye Yang, all from University of Massachusetts–Lowell, will lead the course on Tuesday, July 2.

In this course, the instructors will review the Emotion Coding Technique (Lustick, 2021), a systematic method of qualitative analysis that captures emotions as they arise and helps researchers process them as information about themselves, their participants, and their research objectives. This technique applies a set of reflexive questions to a chunk of data. Instructors will then talk about some of the complexities of naming and reflecting on emotions during data analysis. They will share their own best practices, and participants will hear some additional strategies, including an emotion wheel to choose from. Finally, the course will shift into independent work time so the participants can practice and reflect on the technique. The course is open to all qualitative and mixed methods researchers, with graduate students and early career researchers in mind. The instructors ask that course participants have basic qualitative and mixed methods training, including an understanding of positionality and reflexivity. Course participants are advised, though not required, to have available original qualitative data, such as an interview transcript, with which to practice the technique.

Early registration is encouraged. The full course descriptions indicate whether participants will need access to any software.
