Call for Submissions: A Better Year, A Better World
Special Issue on Promising Practices and Innovations in Postsecondary Education

This call heralds a special issue to be published in Fall 2022 for the reintroduction of AERA’s Division J newsletter, The Pen, to improve policies and practices that promote academic and social safety and belonging in postsecondary education. As states adopt policies and laws that both reduce the number of and pathways for faculty to achieve professional stability and restrict student access to services tied to their social identities, postsecondary scholars and practitioners are uniquely positioned to highlight promising practices and innovations in education to support both student and faculty academic and socio-emotional needs. This volume aims to position the voices of students, practitioners, policymakers, and academics to support university systems as they navigate a contentious world.

We ask that contributors limit their written responses to between 500 and 1,000 words and to be practical in content. The submission deadline is 11:59 PM EDT on October 31, 2022. Materials that have been published or are currently under review for publication elsewhere are ineligible. Contributors should also send a 50-word bio. Submissions, inquiries, and questions can be submitted directly to the volume editor, Dr. Tameka Porter at
