April 2014

Greetings Colleagues!

I hope that everyone is beginning to cover from the frenetic pace of AERA 2014 in Philadelphia!  It is always great to see colleagues of long standing and to meet new Division H members at Movers and Shakers, in the sessions, at the Division H Breakfast and at the Social. I had planned to write to you on Wednesday but just gained access by AERA to the Division H listserv on today.

Evelyn Belton-Kocher, our Division H Secretary, tells me that many of you signed on as volunteers to assist with various activities of the Division.  You will be hearing from us regarding the various activities in which you can become engaged once we work through the lists.

I will be keeping you informed of AERA and Division H happenings at least once a month by way of the Blast (an email update).  Let me know if you believe that we should resurrect the Division H Newsletter as well.

New Committees  I am establishing two new opportunities for volunteers to serve by establishing two new committees:  Strategic Planning Committee (to be co-chaired by Paul LeMahieu and Glynn Ligon) and Professional Development (Rolf Blank, Dale Whittington and Mary Yakimowski have volunteered to assist).  Division H is 44 years old this year and as we approach the Centennial of AERA in 2015 and 2016, we need to work through a process of clarifying who we are in 2014 and where we would like to be five years from the start of the strategic plan.  We must improve outreach to members both in the States and internationally during the time between AERA meetings; we need to refine our efforts with and support of graduate students and early career members; we need to expand our use of various electronic communications media and modes so that this division is able to serve members during the year rather than just atAERA; and we need to re-connect with school district accountability, research/evaluation and assessment directors as well as academicians to strengthen our focus on research and praxis.  Those five items are just some of the areas that I anticipate will be addressed in the strategic plan.  The Professional Development Committee will focus on the identification of the various audiences that we should touch with awareness, orientation, training and other types of professional development activities between AERA meetings as well as work with AERA's Professional Development team and Division A to improve the focus and quality of professional development sessions offered (for a fee at annual meetings) to our members.

Receipts for Coffee Mentoring, Etc.  Graduate students! If you are a Division H member as of the 2014 conference and presented a paper at a roundtable, paper session, poster session or in another similar session, then you are eligible for a $50 token of appreciation.  Get your requests for reimbursement and include the title and session number of your session on the reimbursement request form. Let me know if you need the reimbursement form.  Please also send your Coffee Mentoring receipts (up to $20) as well.  Use the email address in my signature block below to send any reimbursement forms or to ask questions.

KUDOs   Thanks to all who planned and implemented the activities of the 2014 annual meeting and activities for Division H.  I will provide additional detail regarding this item in a future Blast.  Judy Arter has been a great steward of Division H as our Vice President from 2011-14.  We thank her for serving us so well and leaving behind a platform on which to build!  Vickie Cartwright has also served well and we are appreciative of her service.
