June 2023

AERA encourages submissions for participation in the 2024 Annual Meeting. The association hopes to receive paper and session submissions that expand the breadth of knowledge in education research as a field. The 2024 Presidential theme, “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action,” asks the education research community to “engage in a massive undertaking of attending to the simultaneous act of dismantling racial injustice and constructing educational possibilities across P–20 systems.”

Once again, for 2024 the Annual Meeting is planned as a dual-component meeting with a place-based component in Philadelphia, April 11–14, and a virtual component on an online platform, April 25–26. AERA envisions the two components as creating space for strands of work and innovative or novel research that may have been crowded out in the past by space limitations.

AERA looks forward to building on the success of the dual-component 2023 Annual Meeting to expand access and foster engagement for scholars around the globe. Philadelphia is a world-class city, and the virtual component offers the education research community affordable and engaging opportunities to present and connect.

“We are excited about continuing a dual-component meeting for 2024 that will be accessible, flexible, and rewarding for all participants,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Both components of the 2024 Annual Meeting will provide presenters with unparalleled opportunities to share their work and engage with the scholarly community.”

The Call for Submissions encourages paper and session submissions that bring to the fore diverse theoretical, methodological, and subfield or disciplinary perspectives.

New this year, poster sessions and structured poster sessions will be held only in the place-based component of the Annual Meeting. All submitters—for both poster sessions and structured poster sessions—will display their work on video monitors and create their poster presentations through the AERA i-Presentation Gallery.

Also new for 2024, e-Lightening Ed-Talks will be a special feature of the AERA program throughout the place-based component. At the time of submission, authors who submit a paper for a poster session can indicate interest in also presenting it in the form of a brief e-Lightening Ed-Talk. Authors of papers accepted for Ed-Talks will receive guidance on the preparation of such talks.

Aside from poster sessions and structured poster sessions, those submitting papers or sessions will need to make a choice at the outset regarding whether they wish to present in Philadelphia or on the virtual platform, in the event that their submission is accepted. The decision to present in-person or virtually cannot be changed after the submission system closes.

Those presenting at or attending the virtual component of the meeting will have access to major place-based sessions that will be recorded and available on the online platform for viewing by registrants whether virtual only or in Philadelphia. The virtual component of the meeting will also include, through the platform, special high-profile sessions of national and international interest. Those attending the Philadelphia meeting in person will also have access to these and other virtual sessions.

The submission deadline is July 31, 11:59 p.m. PT.
