Citing AERA’s “longstanding commitment to access of persons with disabilities in the field of education research, in other scientific fields, and in education across the life span,” the Council last month endorsed a resolution urging U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The CRPD, which was adopted by the United Nations in 2006, includes two articles that pertain to education research – specifically, language on data protection, respect for privacy, and confidentiality of persons with disabilities that is consistent with the AERA Code of Ethics. It has been signed by President Barack Obama, but has not yet been ratified by the Senate.

Council’s endorsement of the resolution is consistent with prior AERA policy statements and endorsements on human rights issues, including the AERA Statement on Human Rights and the AAAS Resolution on Free and Open Exchange in 2006.

The AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition, which includes AERA, has been reaching out to member scientific societies to support U.S. ratification of CRPD. Following Council’s resolution, AERA will be working closely with the coalition to urge Senate action.
