The 2014 Annual Meeting, to be held in Philadelphia this year (April 3–7), offers a distinguished list of speakers. This AERA annual event is the single largest gathering of scholars in the education research field.
Boasting more than 2,000 sessions, the meeting abounds with cutting-edge research, featured speakers in the general program, and sessions planned by AERA divisions and SIGs. The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Power of Education Research for Innovation in Practice and Policy.” True to the theme, the meeting features presentations and discussions on ideas and data that will shape tomorrow’s education practices and policies.
In her Presidential Address on Saturday, April 5, AERA president Barbara Schneider, John A. Hannah Chair and Distinguished Professor in the College of Education and Department of Sociology at Michigan State University, will present “Aligned Ambitions: What’s Behind the College Mismatch Problem?” (#AERAPres). The address will explore the hot-button issue of “undermatching,” the tendency for low-income and minority high school students to enroll in colleges that are “less selective than their grades, test scores, and aspirations predict.” Schneider’s work focuses on family, social context of schooling, and sociology of knowledge.
On Sunday, April 6, Anthony Bryk, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, will present the AERA Distinguished Lecture, “Improving: Joining Improvement Science to Networked Communities” (#AERAImprove). As the ninth president of the Carnegie Foundation, Bryk is leading work on transforming educational research and development.
On Friday, April 4, Catherine Snow, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at Harvard University, will present the Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture, “Rigor and Realism: Doing Educational Science in the Real World” (#AERAReal). Snow’s research interests include children’s language development, literacy development, and issues related to the acquisition of English oral and literacy skills by language minority children.
Launching the Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 3, Teresa Sullivan, eighth president of the University of Virginia (UVA), will deliver the Opening Plenary Session. Sullivan is a respected scholar in labor force demography. The author or coauthor of six books and many scholarly articles, Sullivan most recently studied measurement of productivity in higher education. Since taking office in 2010, she has led UVA through a period of significant progress.
