The Division J Program Committee has been hard at work preparing our part in the 2017 Annual Meeting: “Knowledge to Action: Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity.” This year AERA received over 11,000 proposals with Division J receiving 825 proposals! Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal (or two or three). We tried something new this year and split Section 2 into two sub-sections: 2a) College Student Access and 2b) College Student Success and Outcomes. Section 2 has historically received the largest number of proposals and this year was no different. College Student Success and Outcomes received nearly three times the number of proposals as any other section.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to be a reviewer this year. You will receive your review assignments by August 10 and will have until August 31 to complete your reviews. We wish to thank our 82 graduate student reviewers, many of whom are reviewing for the first time and our 234 non-graduate student reviewers, many of whom have served Division J in this capacity for many years. You also still have time to volunteer to be a chair or discussant during the conference. Please log on to “My AERA” on www.aera.net by August 31 to volunteer.
As we look forward to the annual meeting in San Antonio, we are excited by the opportunities that the location offers us. We will be highlighting the research, educational issues, and scholars within the context of San Antonio and Texas in one of the Vice Presidential conference sessions. This session, spotlighting the impact of Tejano scholars on higher education research, is being planned by Stella Flores and Victor Saenz. We have also dedicated a Vice Presidential session to highlight Indigenous scholars and research and plan to continue an Indigenous focus through the 2019 annual meeting. Finally, a Vice Presidential session will highlight “Views from Around the Globe” and will feature research findings and emerging research agendas across different countries. And these are just three of the Vice Presidential sessions we have planned thus far. The remaining Vice Presidential sessions will be planned at our upcoming Program Committee meeting in September. We are looking forward to a fantastic annual meeting in San Antonio.
