Open-Rank Faculty Position: Methodology in Research on Diversity and Equity, University of Michigan
Print
The School of Education at the University of Michigan is conducting an open-rank search to hire several colleagues with expertise in research methodology, whose scholarship focuses on the study of diversity and equity in educational contexts. The goal of this cluster hire is to galvanize and focus collaborative research efforts that will draw synergistically on different research methodologies in order to (1) optimize the educational and social benefits of diversity, and (2) redress inequities related to social, cultural, and economic differences.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Understanding the causes and consequences of diversity and equity (and inequity) in education requires the study of a range of complex processes. These processes include interactions among individuals and groups, in different roles, working at different levels within and beyond the education system, on different time scales, and in relationship to different social and educational issues. A scholarly community equipped with expertise in multiple theoretical and methodological approaches will best achieve this understanding.

Therefore, we seek candidates who will bring deep knowledge of methodologies -- grounded in theoretical traditions (e.g., social, cognitive, organizational) and philosophical perspectives -- relevant to education research, policy, and practice promoting diversity and equity. We anticipate hiring a set of faculty whose individual scholarly foci will enhance the Schools collective capacity to engage in multi-methodological research and prepare our students to acquire this capacity. Illustrative of the range of relevant methodologies are: case studies, design research, discourse analysis, ethnographies, experiments and quasi-experiments, historical analyses, large-scale surveys, network analyses, qualitative observation and interview, randomized clinical trials, and studies that employ multiple methods.

An important component of this cluster hire focuses on graduate education. Individuals hired into these positions will play key roles in the School of Education: teaching introductory, core, and advanced courses in methods and methodology, along with other theoretically-focused courses relevant to diversity and equity; joining other faculty in developing coherent, multi-methodological curriculum design, supervising exams and dissertations; and fostering the development of graduate students as researchers, educators, and leaders.

The University of Michigan has a deep commitment to interdisciplinarity and offers unparalleled intellectual resources for methodologically-oriented scholars in the social sciences, through, for example, the Institute for Social Research and the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. The cohort of new hires will also have the opportunity to advance the School of Educations commitment to diversity and equity, joining other faculty in symposia, collaborative research, and innovative activities designed to bring our collective talents to bear on one of our nations most pressing issues.

Qualifications:

 Successful candidates will have:
·       A doctorate in education or one of its allied fields, such as: anthropology, economics, learning sciences, linguistics, organizational studies, political science, psychology, sociology, or studies of practice in human service professions;
·       Demonstrated capability to participate in and advance a coherent research agenda;
·       Evidence of rigorous, relevant application of expertise in at least one research methodology;
·       A sustained, substantive focus on issues of diversity and equity
·       Experience with - or the potential to -  teach graduate courses within their area(s) of methodological expertise;
·       Experience with - or the potential to - mentor students and supervise dissertations;
·       Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups;
·       Capability and commitment to support the design and evaluation of a multiple-methodology curriculum for the School of Education;
·       Interest in collaborative research projects;
·       Familiarity with and capacity for developing and securing grants to support research.

Nominations and applications will be reviewed beginning October 7, 2103, and will continue until the position is filled.  We seek to make appointments that will begin in September 2014.

Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, two publications or writing samples that demonstrate scholarly accomplishment and methodological area(s) of expertise, a sample syllabus or design ideas for a methodology course, and the names of four professional references. We prefer that materials be submitted electronically to ummethodsearch@umich.eduwith the phrase MethodDiversityEquity in the subject line.  For questions or hardcopy materials, please contact the search committee, c/o Ms. Terrie Priebe at the same email address.
